What is Stainless Steel 316?
Stainless Steel 316 (UNS S31600 / Werkstoff Nr. 1.4401) is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel and the second most widely used stainless steel grade after SS 304. The key differentiator of SS 316 from SS 304 is the addition of 2% to 3% molybdenum, which dramatically improves its resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack — especially in chloride-rich, marine, and industrial environments. SS 316 contains approximately 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, giving it superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional chromium-nickel austenitic grades.
SS 316 is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, though it may become slightly magnetic after cold working or welding. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment; strength can only be increased through cold working. ERAMETS STEEL ALLOYS supplies ASTM A240 Type 316 Stainless Steel Sheets and Plates conforming to ASME SA240, DIN EN 10088, JIS G4304, JIS G4305, BS, and IS standards.
What is Stainless Steel 316L?
Stainless Steel 316L (UNS S31603 / Werkstoff Nr. 1.4404) is an extra-low carbon modification of SS 316. The “L” stands for Low Carbon, with the carbon content restricted to a maximum of 0.03% compared to 0.08% maximum in standard SS 316. This reduced carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding, which eliminates sensitization of grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and ensures excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. SS 316L does not require post-weld annealing in most applications, making it the preferred grade for heavily welded fabrications and critical welded structures.
In most corrosive environments, the corrosion resistance of SS 316 and SS 316L are roughly equal. However, in environments sufficiently corrosive to cause intergranular corrosion of welds and heat-affected zones, SS 316L is the recommended choice due to its low carbon content. ERAMETS STEEL ALLOYS supplies ASTM A240 SS 316L Sheets and SS 316L Plates in ready stock for immediate dispatch.
SS 316 vs SS 316L — Key Differences
Property | SS 316 | SS 316L |
UNS | S31600 | S31603 |
W.Nr. | 1.4401 | 1.4404 |
Max Carbon | 0.08% | 0.03% |
Weldability | Good | Excellent |
Sensitization Risk | Moderate | Very Low |
Tensile Strength | Higher | Slightly Lower |
Post-Weld Annealing | May be required | Not required |
Dual Certification | Common | Common |
Intergranular Corrosion Resistance | Good | Excellent |
It is common industry practice for SS 316L to be dual-certified as both 316 and 316L. The low carbon chemistry of 316L, combined with a small nitrogen addition, enables it to meet the mechanical property requirements of standard SS 316. Dual-certified 316 / 316L material is certified to ASTM A240 and ASME SA240 simultaneously.

Industrial manufacturing cities such as Surat, Vadodara, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam, and Kolkata also contribute significantly to demand due to their strong base in engineering, textile, marine, and heavy industries.
Emerging industrial cities like Jaipur, Indore, Nagpur, Ludhiana, and Faridabad are also witnessing increasing consumption of SS 316 / 316L materials due to rapid industrialization and infrastructure growth.
SS 316L is a low-carbon modification of SS 316. The maximum carbon content in SS 316L is 0.03% compared to 0.08% in standard SS 316. This lower carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during and after welding, eliminates sensitization in the heat-affected zone, and ensures excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. SS 316L is the preferred choice for heavily welded structures where post-weld annealing is not possible.
The primary difference is the addition of molybdenum in SS 316 (2–3%), which gives it significantly superior resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack compared to SS 304. SS 316 also has higher nickel content, offering better performance in marine environments, chloride-rich conditions, and aggressive chemical processing. SS 316 is more expensive than SS 304 due to its higher alloy content.
Yes. The molybdenum content of SS 316 and SS 316L makes them the preferred stainless steel grades for marine and coastal environments. They offer excellent resistance to corrosion in polluted marine atmospheres, seawater, and chloride-rich environments where SS 304 would fail.
SS 316 is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. However, it may become slightly magnetic as a result of cold working, forming, or welding due to partial transformation of austenite to martensite.
Yes. SS 316L has excellent strength and toughness at cryogenic and sub-zero temperatures, making it suitable for cryogenic storage vessels, liquid nitrogen tanks, and low-temperature process equipment.
Dual-certified SS 316 / 316L material simultaneously meets the chemical composition and mechanical property requirements of both Type 316 and Type 316L specifications. This is a very common and widely accepted industry practice. The low carbon chemistry of 316L, combined with nitrogen addition, enables it to meet the mechanical properties of standard 316.
SS 316 offers good oxidation resistance up to 870°C during intermittent service and up to 925°C during continuous service. Note that SS 316 / 316L should not be used in environments containing sulfuric acid at elevated temperatures, as molybdenum can react with sulfur ions, potentially forming sulfides that may lead to corrosion.
